Art House Co-op Photo Response Project

As you may have noticed, I’m a bit of a fan of Brooklyn’s Art House Co-op – they of The Sketchbook Project and many other community art endeavours.  And I use ‘community’ here in its widest sense as they invite people from all over the world to take part in their projects.  And take part they do, in their thousands!

The 2012 Sketchbook Project tour kicked off this week in New York, and I have been desperately peering at the photos of the shelves and shelves of lovely journals, to see if I can spot mine, but no luck yet.

Let me know if you can spot a fairly thin book with bright pink binding….

The tour comes to London in October and I can’t wait to go visit my book :)

I’m not 100% sure yet if I will be taking part in the 2013 Sketchbook Project ( it doesn't look like the tour is coming to Europe next year, so that is a downer :(  )

But in the meantime, I’ve been taking part in a couple of their smaller calls to action.

First I was one of just 200 people lucky enough to grab a space on The Jar Project, which I have already blogged here

And more recently I signed up for the Photo Response Project

This was an interesting one that I couldn’t resist playing along with –

They gave us 5 photos:

 1:

 2:
 3:
 4:
5:

And we had to choose one, and make something prompted or inspired by it in some way – you could use any media – the only proviso being that whatever you produced had to be 6”x4” in size and fairly flat – nothing 3-D

I hummed and harred for ages as none of the photos were screaming out at me.  In the end I decided that I liked photo 2 best, but still had no idea what to actually do with it.  Then my other half started talking about his work colleague going to Liverpool for a few days and ‘where was that beach we went to with all the statues?’ – and cogs started to turn….

So here you go – my postcard sized response to photo #2:

I was thinking along the lines of how, if something bad creeps up on you slowly enough, you either don’t really notice it, or you do but you don’t bother to fix it because you think you have all the time in the world….and then one day you’re engulfed by it, and then it’s too late. I’m depressing you, I know, sorry! :)

Not sure if I like the end result or not but I often feel that way about stuff I make.  Either way it went in the post to America today, so let’s hope it arrives in time for the deadline.  I look forward to seeing what everyone else does prompted by the five photographs.

I’ve also signed up for one other Art House Co-op project, one that involves public art, very much up my street.  Will blog all about it when it’s done….

Rocking Your World Friday Tuesday - week 15

Rocking Your World … Tuesday?

Oh dear oh dear oh dear, I’m a bad Rockette.  A bad blogger all round, actually, it’s been very quiet here recently other than my Project 366 updates.  Must try harder.

I was wondering it’s worth me doing this RYWF post 4 days late, as before I know it it will be time to do another one – but then I’ll end up with two weeks’ worth of documenting to do at once which will take forever, and I might forget stuff - so come on, let’s have a quick whizz through week 15:

So we start with the Easter weekend – an extra long weekend off work would rock anyone’s world, amirite??  Especially since for me it was the start of a 6 day break – woohoo :)

We managed to be lucky with the weather over Easter – so that’s definitely something I’m grateful for – it wasn’t perfect, but it was always good enough for where we were and what we wanted to do – no plans were disrupted.  You can’t ask for much more than that in England in April.

On Good Friday we all piled over to Jay’s house – first time I’ve been there in yonks as he always comes to mine as it’s just easier to be in Swindon at the weekends during the hockey season.  He had a three year old Canucks game (NHL ice hockey) on his TV recorder which I hadn’t seen before.  It was so cool seeing our old players again and hearing the announcers make endless jokes about Willie Mitchell’s big stick, it really took me back!  I really enjoyed watching it – definitely a lot more fun than watching Vancouver play over the past few days – but the less said about that the better – this is supposed to be a happy post!!

After the game we went to visit Jay’s nan and gramps – and admired his nan’s impressive collection of decorative teapots (the photo only shows about a quarter of them!).  My grandparents in law (ish) are lovely – I don’t have any of my own as my last surviving grandparent died when I was six – so it’s nice to be able to adopt someone else’s :)

On the Saturday, Connor went to his dad’s so Reece and I spent the afternoon making ATC backgrounds on canvas – Reece really enjoys arty stuff and it’s nice for me to have someone to splash paint around with :)  We haven’t yet finished our ATCs off but I’ll be sure to share them on here when we do.

And then it was playoff hockey time!  Which gave us a good excuse to wear silly hats! Yay!  (Sadly we lost – sob – but the hat wearing was fun regardless)

So that’s it – no more Swindon hockey until September – I’ll miss it, I always do – but the plus point of that is that without a 5 o’clock game to rush home for every Saturday, we can start doing more at the weekends and having big days out.  Hooray!

Another thing that put a big smile on my face this week was the release of Instagram for Android – at last!  This was the one app that had really made me envious of my iPhone wielding pals.  Within 3 hours of release I had it installed on my trusty Droid, and now, as you can see from the sudden abundance of square photos on my blog,  I’m instagramming everything in sight! :D

Here are my published pics so far.  If any of you out there are fellow IG-ers, please let me know your name on there so I can follow you – I’m ‘floroo17’

On Easter Sunday we had a brilliant day – we went down to glorious Dorset to see Jay’s mum and to meet her gorgeous new puppy, Reg.  He is a “toodle”, which is a cross between a Tibetan something-or-other and a poodle.  Isn’t he gorgeous!  He’s difficult to photograph though, because of all that black fur.

The weather forecast had been rotten, and we drove through some pretty dreary weather on the way down, but when we got to the coast the sun came out :)

We took Reg down to the beach for a walk (ma-in-law is lucky enough to live in beautiful Lulworth Cove, just a few 100 yards from the beach), where he had fun digging holes in the sand, and then we all drove to Portland Bill to see the famous lighthouse.

Climbing to the top of a lighthouse was one of our 101 family goals, so today we got to tick another goal off the list – 32 down, 69 to go!

Back in Lulworth, we met another new addition to the family – Jay’s baby niece Sofia – so cute!  New babies and puppies all in one day – squeeee!

Tuesday 10th was the first of my two extra days off work.  It was my eldest son’s 22nd birthday – boy that makes me feel old!  He had a bunch of mates round so Connor and I vacated the premises to give them some space, and we went down to London to visit my dad.  Lots of relative visiting this Easter!

Before we got to my dad’s house though we popped up to Chelsea (we’re gert posh we are :) ) and visited the National Army Museum (guns! For Connor) and the Saatchi Gallery (art! For me :) ).  Luckily I enjoyed the museum too and Connor enjoyed the gallery, so neither of us had to suffer through the other’s choice.

The exhibition at the Saatchi – “Gesamtkunstwerk: new art from Germany” – was absolutely brilliant – and I was just about to recommend you all go to see it but according to their website it has now finished :(  We must have caught it in its last few days – very lucky!

We got back to my dad’s at about 4 ish, and spent some time at his house before ambling round the corner to the Hungry Horse pub where we had a slap up dinner.  And I went home with a bootful of National Geographic magazines – some of them older than me – which my dad gave me.  They are fantastic.  Not sure where I’m going to keep them all, mind.

All in all a fab day.

On Wednesday we had one of those rare days where we had nothing to do - no work, no visits planned, no obligations.  Nice.  I spent the whole day making stuff.  Or at least starting to make stuff.  I didn't finish anything but I started lots and had fun in the process.

And that just about wraps up the week.  It was a busy one :)

I'd better shoot off to Virginia's blog to link this up before next week's post goes up and I miss my chance!

Have fun all, it'll soon be Friday again! :)

Rocking Your World Friday week 14

I'm running a bit late this week - Easter has thrown me off course - but let's pretend it's still Good Friday for the purpose of this post....

So what has rocked my little corner of the world this week?

First of all - Darby coming home for the weekend - I was expecting him on Saturday but be turned up early on Friday night which was a lovely surprise.  Great to have him around, if only for a short while.

We had a super chilled day on Saturday, usually we are rushing around all the time (which suits me just fine as I love to be kept busy) but every once in a while it's nice to have a real do nothing day.  We did go to our usual hockey game in the evening but other than that, it was just a day of TV, playing Draw Something and sitting around chatting.

On Sunday I was a bit busier - I dropped Darby back home to Bristol in the morning, and then we headed off to Bracknell for the afternoon.  We took the boys to the Coral Reef swimming pool, which is absolutely brilliant, more like an indoor water park than a traditional pool, with loads of slides, a lazy river, etc.  They didn't want to get out!

While the kiddies swam I carried on with the sketch of Cabot Tower in Bristol that I started a few weeks back in situ.  It was nice to just it and draw away while watching the lads splash around and have fun.

After swimming we went on to the Bracknell rink to see our local team take on the Bracknell Bees in the last game of our regular season.  Away games are always fun, especially when we win!  (and we did - 7-3 - although I felt a little guilty by proxy as we didn't really need to win this game having got through to the playoffs already, but Bracknell did, and we finished their season for them.  Sorry Bees! better luck next year!)

I was on a bit of a roll with my Cabot Tower drawing after not quite finishing it at swimming, so I whipped out my watercolour paints during both the period breaks at the hockey game and finished it off there.  I've never painted at a rink before, it was fun, although I did get some funny looks :D  And here it is done:
I'm quite pleased with it, it's actually recognisable! :D

Monday morning was the start of the Easter holidays.  Unfortunately I still had to go to work all this week, boo (well, except Good Friday) - but one thing I do really enjoy about the holidays is I get to spend a little extra time with my 9 year old as his holiday club is in the town where I work - around 25 minutes from home - and it's great to have his company on the drive.  On Monday morning we were both a little tired, so he decided he would be DJ Connor and he played a special "wake up mix" from his iPod.  The highlight for me was the segue from AC/DC's Highway to Hell into Larger Than Life by the Backstreet Boys :)  Real 'turn it up loud and sing your heart out' stuff - it certainly did the trick of waking us both up and delivered me to work with a big smile on my face :)

The rest of the week was mainly getting my head down, and getting all my work done so I can have a couple of days off after Easter, not much else to report, so I'll wrap this up now and pop over to Virginia's blog to link this up....

I hope everyone has a lovely Easter, with all the chocolate you can eat, and some :)

Waxing lyrical....

It's R-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-rock CJ time again!

This is Sian's journal - and it's all about song lyrics - always a great subject to work with

The brief was simply to choose a rawk song or two whose lyrics are particularly meaningful to me, and, well, art 'em up!

I couldn't just choose the one, as yet again it would be Pearl Jam and I've already bored everyone's socks off in this circle with PJ stuff - and once I expanded the scope to two songs, it was hard to stop - so I ended up with four:

Swing Life Away by Rise Against

I'll show you mine if you show me yours first
Let's compare scars, I'll tell you whose is worst
Let's unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words

Back when I was fresh out of a pretty awful marriage followed by another less than successful relationship, I was feeling pretty sorry for myself.  Like you do.

And I used to listen to this song a lot and dream a little dream about meeting some guy who was just as messed up as me and how we would kind of heal each other....or something :)

Instead I met a wonderful man who is totally sane and not messed up in the slightest - and it turns out that is an even better plan! :D

But I still love the song :)

Present Tense by Pearl Jam

You can spend your time alone, redigesting past regrets
Or you can come to terms and realise, you're the only one who can't forgive yourself
Makes much more sense, to live in the present tense

This one had to be in the mix somewhere - after all if a song's lyrics mean so much to you that you get them tattooed on your leg, then the chances are they are pretty important!

I already mentioned the god awful marriage, didn't I?

Well that lasted 12 years - at least 8 of which, maybe more, I shouldn't have put up with.

For a long time I beat myself up for not getting out sooner, and all the crap that my two sons (now grown up) ended up living through - and all the crap that I lived through too

This song literally changed my life as it made me snap the hell out of it and start living my life for the now instead of obsessing about how rubbish the past was

Thank you PJ!

In Relief by John Frusciante

When your leader's gone, he means to make you strong, he never went away.  Because what you need, you are.

I'm not overly keen on the handwriting on this one, I wanted to write all the lyrics by hand because it's more personal and all - but this one turned out a bit of a mess.  Ah well.

This is an amazing song, and it helped me through some difficult times - when you feel like you're on your own, don't panic, be strong - you have it in you to get through this.

Grind by Alice In Chains

You'd be well advised, not to plan my funeral before the body dies....

This last little snippet is something I mutter under my breath sometimes .... I'm a bit of a soft touch, and people take advantage of that from time to time - but those who really take the piss tend to find out too late that they under-estimated me.

(*evil cackle*)

Don't write me off as harmless, people, not until the body dies.....

(ok, now you all think I'm a psycho, I'm nice really, honest!)

Rocking Your World Friday week 13

Thirteen may be unlucky for some, but touch wood not for me, as I've had a pretty good time of it recently...

My rockin’ week this time around started by living up to its name – with a trip to London Town last weekend to see the mighty Korn.  Oh yeah!

And before we even got to the gig I had something to cheer about – we were walking from our parking spot to the venue, and I spotted a real life piece by Invader – I was super chuffed because these are getting harder and harder to find nowadays as they tend to get half inched and re-sold as soon as he puts them up.  We didn’t even see any in Paris last year despite looking out for them, and there used to be loads of them there.

(this pic is actually from Birmingham the night before but I couldn't find any good ones on the net from the London gig )
The gig itself was awesome.  Korn have released a new album recently with heavy dubstep overtones, much to the dismay of some of their fans – but I love it!  So they brought with them a Canadian dubstep DJ called Downlink as the support act, and he was excellent.

The sound rattles your whole body, and tickles your nose :) it’s intense.  Really really good.

And then Korn themselves were fantastic.  What a buzz.  Bagpipes and everything :) Great night out.

great setlist!
The gig was Sunday night, and Jay and I had Monday morning off work to recover – so we took advantage of the lack of kiddies around hogging the telly with the Xbox or Disney Channel, and we watched a movie.  What a treat!  We hardly ever get to watch a film together as usually, by the time we’ve packed the kids off to bed, we’re too tired to start watching something long.

The film we watched was the ice hockey comedy Goon, which we didn’t manage to catch when it was out at the cinema – I think we were probably the last hockey fans in the country to watch it.  It was better than I thought it would be, but also gorier – a bit too much blood for my liking!  But then I’m a wuss when it comes to hockey injuries.  Seann William Scott was actually really sweet in the lead role – very different to how he played Stifler in American Pie!  Definitely worth a watch.

Other things rockin’ my little world this week, in no particular order:

- The GLORIOUS sunny weather we have had all week

- Getting a real bargain BMX bike from eBay second hand but in excellent nick after Reece’s last bike died a death

- Absent mindedly flicking through the list of watch-anytime programmes that come with my cable TV, and finding a brilliant documentary about Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam frontman) and his love of surfing

- The school disco for giving me a couple of kiddie free hours while simultaneously being super fun for Connor

- Finding a quirky little shop I didn’t know existed in the town where I work that sells really cool and unique postcards – perfect for my Postcrossing hobby

- Discovering that the new lady who has just started at my office is a bit of a kindred spirit, we even share the same tattooist :)  And she is interested in crafts too, and roller derby.  It’s great to have someone to natter to at work who you have stuff in common with.

- Checking out a new exhibition at the art gallery in town – prints by British artist John Piper.  These were really fantastic full size and in the flesh.  Really bold colours.  Great eye candy and inspiration.

- A lovely meal at the Thai restaurant in town (my first ever Thai food, I think) for my colleague’s leaving lunch

- a parcel from Amazon (love new books :) )

All in all, not a bad week at all :)

I’ll be linking this post up at Rocker Central – ie Virginia’s blog - it's our little haven of positivity, why don't you join us?
